STEM themed weeks and days
Pi Day Pi Day is an annual celebration. It falls on the 3rd month and the 14th day. Why? It was started in America in 1988 by Larry Shaw who was a physicist. In America they format dates as month/day. Pi is 3.14…. Hence Pi Day falling on this date. In 2009, it became an official holiday in the US.
Ada Lovelace Day This day falls in October on the second Tuesday. Why? This day is chosen as it is a day of convenience. Ada was based in the UK and this date falls outside of public holiday, any school holidays and seasons of exams. This day is a celebration of women’s achievement in the STEM field. But who is Ada Lovelace? Ada Lovelace was a mathematician in the 1800’s.
British Science Week A ten day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths.

LGBTQ+ STEM Day A celebration of LGBTQ+ people who work in STEM
Tomorrow’s Engineers This is a week used to change the views that young people, parents and teachers may have one engineering. It is a week which aims to inspire individuals into choosing this as their career.
World Space Week The United Nations General Assembly in 1999 stated that between 4th and the 10th October a World Space week will be held. These are 2 significant dates as October 4th 1957 was when Sputnik 1 was launched and 10th October 2967 was when the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of State in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space was signed.
International Women in Engineering Day This day was created by the Women’s Engineering Society as a way of raising the profile of women in engineering. It shines a light on the opportunities available for girls in this career path.
